Planning a Trip to Quartzsite, AZ

I’ve been thinking about taking a trip to Quartzsite, AZ for a while now.  I could essentially use the trailer as giant, sturdy tent.  I don’t have the time, funds, or proper environment to actually do all the work in the trailer that it needs to be livable as a full-time RV right now, but I can throw a mattress, couch, some chairs, a folding table and a few other things into it and “rough” it for a couple weeks.  There’s also a couple of RV-specific events that I would really love to take part in, and the idea of spending the entire month of January in MN with no activities isn’t exactly appealing.

The activities I’d really like to take part in are the Rubber Tramp Rendezvous (January 10-22) and the Quartzsite RV Show (January 21-29).

The Rubber Tramp Rendezvous (aka, RTR) is the event I’m most interested in.  This is an annual gathering of people like me that have decided to do something different and most people look at them strangely.  It looks like a very inviting and accepting event, and I’m really looking forward to meeting some RV people.

The Quartzite RV Show is a huge gathering of RVers of all kinds.  Lots of vendors selling everything RV-related possible, and it looks like it’d be fun to wander about for a while there.

I’m thinking about leaving sometime around Jan 1st and returning by Jan 31st.  I’ll take a couple days getting down there, up to two weeks there, and a couple of days getting back.  This trip is meant just as an adventure.  I’m not moving everything out of my house, renting it out, doing mail forwarding or anything else.  This is just a trip to get away from MN for a while, enjoy some warmer weather, and most importantly, go socialize with fellow RVers.

I’ll be staying on BLM land while I’m there and using free overnight spots as much as possible while traveling so my “camping” costs will be virtually $0.  Since I will be staying places were there are no facilities, I’ll need to be providing my own.  I’ll be purchasing a variety of gear, mostly on Amazon or at Walmart, and I’ll be reviewing each of those items in separate blog posts as they come in.

I’ll continue my part-time working during the month, and in fact, if I didn’t tell people I wasn’t at home, they probably wouldn’t be able to tell.  I just purchased a Verizon JetPack with unlimited service, so I should have good connectivity the entire time.  I’ll review that in more detail in a future post as well.

Of course, it would be really my car would sell nice if before I go.  I had a couple nibbles last weekend, but they didn’t work out.

I also got word that the trailer is on schedule, and possibly slightly ahead of schedule.  But, they’re also cautious about shipping it in terrible weather, so that could delay it by a couple days.  (It’s being built in Indiana and then shipping for me to pick up in Wisconsin.)

I was talking with a friend yesterday about the trip, and she had a new combination-world, “nervciting”.  Nervous and Exciting in one.  For this trip, I’m a little nervous because I’ll be doing something so radically different, but I’m far more excited about getting out and living!
